On being a peri-crone—

A dear friend visited me this weekend and of course the conversation turned to menopause as we both turned 50 recently.

I am still in peri-menopause, the years leading up to when your period finally stops, and let me tell you it’s been a ride.

What I find interesting (and frustrating) is that no one knows much about it, including doctors. And yes, this is a big generalization. A topic for another time.

Truthfully I don’t know if what I’ve been going through these past few years is because of peri-menopause or something else. I’m sure it’s a mixed bag of many different things. But I have noticed a theme - that I feel like I’m doing something wrong for aging.

This feeling of doing something wrong actually pervades every part of my life which makes me sad. And I know it doesn’t serve me.

What would it look like for me to embrace this stage in my life? What would it be like to really honour my transition/transformation into a crone - a woman of great wisdom, beauty and power and not the crusty old hag version?

I’ve never fully embraced any stage or passage in my life and right now seems like as good of a time as any to change that. I do believe I’m ready.

A question I sometimes get is: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I COME TO A SOUND BATH?

And the way I see it is it’s up to you, how you use the baths to support you, and what is going on in your life in the present moment.

At the very least I think that scheduling them into your life regularly is a beautiful ritual and solid self-care strategy. Like getting a massage that you go to weekly or monthly (or whatever your jam is).

But if one benefit you receive from the baths is deep relaxation and stress reduction and your life is currently a shit show then hitting sound baths more often during these times could be really helpful.

And I suppose the question is bigger than how often you should attend a bath. It’s more about asking yourself how committed are you to taking care of yourself full stop - something that is so important but understandably isn’t always prioritized when life gets in the way. Are you tuning into yourself regularly to see how you’re doing? Are you then doing what you can to bring yourself back into balance if you’re off?
Are you putting yourself first? Do you have your own back? Are you choosing you?

Just a few thoughts on this sunny post solar eclipse morning.
